What is PDLC switchable glass?

Switchable glass — also called smart glass or privacy glass — is glass that can change from frosted and private to crystal clear at the flick of a switch. No blinds. No curtains. Just glass that does the job on its own.

The technology that makes this possible is called PDLC.

What does PDLC stand for?

PDLC means Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal. It's a wafer-thin film made of tiny liquid-crystal droplets suspended in a clear polymer, sandwiched between two transparent conductive layers. This film is either laminated inside a glass panel or applied as a self-adhesive film onto glass you already have.

How does it actually work?

Because it defaults to private when there's no power, a power cut simply leaves your glass frosted. You're never accidentally left exposed.

Is it safe and expensive to run?

Yes and no — it's very safe and very cheap to run. PDLC glass works on a safe, low-voltage transformer and draws only about 5 watts per square metre — less than a single LED bulb. Laminated versions also hold together if the glass is ever broken, just like a car windscreen.

Where do people use it?

Everywhere they'd otherwise fight with blinds:

The bottom line

PDLC switchable glass gives you the openness and light of glass with privacy you control instantly. It's cleaner than blinds, smarter than curtains, and — as prices in India have fallen — increasingly affordable.
